TRI Art Gallery, Kolkata

The Accidental Triangle is the new home of Kolkata’s youngest and most daring art and cultural institution. The unusual shape of the building is the inadvertent meeting point of various trajectories that traversed the city through history.

The retrofit of this former residential building plays on the differing geometries and orientations that meet at this site, and the building becomes a rationalisation of these differences. The strategy for renovation involves the selective retention of certain parts and textures of the existing building that announce the age and history of the building, which are in turn contrasted with modern day insertions that bring in the most advanced technologies, that enable the presentation and consumption of the art on display.
